We made out annual escape to Boothbay Harbor Maine to celebrate our wedding anniversary. This year it was to mark 45 years of wedded bliss. Not like me to was poetic. We stopped in Connecticut to visit with with family in Naugatuck and wound up spending the night in Waterbury at the Holiday Inn Express thanks to a gift certificate my son had won at a charity event earlier in the year. It was good to see them after all the traveling we had done this year. On August 31 we finished the ride to Boothbay and settled into the Rocktide Inn on the water. It was not a nice day as i had developed a backache during the week and the ride just aggravated it. We relaxed at the motel and did get some supplies to ease the discomfort.
On Saturday, September 1, our anniversary we woke up to a bright sunny day which promised to be gorgeous. We didn't do much other than go to the Craft show on the green at Boothbay and after some purchases we took a ride to East Boothbay and Ocean Point, a particularly scenic spot with a stone chapel at the end. Every time we go there on a Saturday there is a wedding going on and this day didn't disappoint. The bride was coming down the steps waiting to step into the limo. For the evening we had a double of lobsters and witnessed a gorgeous sunset over the harbor.
Sunday we started off with church at the Lady of Peace RC church. We love this service as they start the service with "America the Beautiful" and end it with "God Bless America" Both favorites of mine and I have a hard time keeping a dry eye with these two. After church we took a ride out to Pemaquid Point Lighthouse and further up the coast for the views ot the sea. After a stop at Edgecomb Pottery In the evening we had a double lobster meal at the Lobster Dock and then a walk across the footbridge to the ice cream shop for desert.
On Monday we left Boothbay around 10:00 AM knowing that we wouldn't reach home that day. The only question was where we would stop for the day. We cruised into Ogunquit, Maine but that was insane as there was no parking available and we continued south. We stopped next at Newburryport but found that to be impossible also as there was a street festival going on. There was only one more place to head for - Gloucester, Mass. We stopped for lunch at the Village Restaurant at Essex - one of our favorite restaurants when in the area and it didn't disappoint. You guessed it a lobster roll, preceded by our favorite Sicilian Seafood Chowder. After arriving in Gloucester we spent some time on Stacy Boulevard right on the water and visited the memorial for Fishermen's Wives and the Gloucester Fisherman's statue. We checked into a motel on the ocean at Bass Rocks. A beautiful view of the ocean. In the evening we found that our favorite ice cream shop - The Holy Cow - had gone out of business a few years ago and we had to hunt up another. Things don't stay the same. On Tuesday Morning we had a great breakfast at Lee's and returned home at 3:00 PM. A great weekend.
